Taking a taxi in Seoul: find your ride, confirm the price, get home
If you have missed public transport, first open late-night help. Keep your group and luggage together in an open, staffed place while you check options. Do not assume an airport train or daytime bus is still running.
1. Find an official pickup point
Use a marked taxi stand or an established booking service. At an airport, follow the taxi signs and ask the information desk if unsure. For a booked car, match the vehicle plate and pickup point to the booking. Do not leave with someone whose vehicle or price you cannot verify.
A station can have several exits and taxi ranks. Share the actual pickup point with your group. With large cases, ask whether both passengers and luggage fit before loading.
2. Show the exact destination and confirm payment
Show the full Korean accommodation address, rather than only a romanized hotel name. A photo of the entrance can help distinguish similarly named properties. Ask whether the fare uses a meter or the price shown in your booking, and whether tolls or booking fees are additional.
Card payment is common, but a particular foreign card or in-app registration may fail. Confirm your payment method before boarding. If a booking app rejects your number or card, ask your accommodation to arrange a vehicle or use the staffed rank. Do not assume an internet-only SIM can make a phone call.

3. Understand the fare before you agree
Seoul's published surcharge for regular taxis is 20% at 22:00–23:00 and 02:00–04:00, and 40% at 23:00–02:00. Other vehicle classes and booking products differ. Distance, traffic, tolls, vehicle class and pickup arrangements affect the total; a single airport-to-city price range cannot establish whether your particular ride is overpriced.
Check the city's current fare information and the booking details. If a quote is unclear, ask staff to explain it before entering. A photographed number alone cannot confirm a fair total for an unknown route.
4. Arrive and keep your belongings
Wear your seat belt. At arrival, check the total and ask for a receipt: 영수증 주세요. Collect all bags and your phone before the vehicle leaves. Keep the receipt or booking record if you need to query a charge or report lost property.
If a charge seems wrong, record the time, route, plate and receipt and seek help without arguing in the road. 1330 offers tourism assistance; a call does not guarantee a refund or immediate action. Published operating hours differ, so after midnight ask your accommodation or on-site staff first. For immediate danger call 112; for fire or an urgent medical emergency call 119.
Before the next evening out

How much will my airport taxi cost? Check the selected vehicle and current booking or meter basis, including tolls and other charges. The destination, traffic and vehicle type affect the total; confirm before boarding.
Can I use a foreign card? Confirm with the service or driver before loading luggage. Card acceptance in a vehicle and card registration in an app are different checks.
